Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome
PCOS is characterized by irregular periods, infertility, recurrent pregnancy loss (miscarriage), and pelvic pain. PCOS is most often seen in the overweight or obese individual and frequently associated with high blood pressure, prediabetes/diabetes, and high cholesterol.
Since the underlying cause is most often the individual’s excessive weight, the treatment recommended will be weight loss through lifestyle changes, in addition to the traditional medical treatment to restore normal ovulation and normal regular menstruation. On occasion, surgical treatments, such as D and C and laparoscopy, to evaluate and treat abnormal uterine bleeding and pelvic pain, respectively, will be recommended.
